Text chat guide

Random text chat for the camera-shy

Text mode is the same matching pool with none of the pressure: no camera, no microphone, just a conversation with another adult who picked the same interest tags. It is the fastest way to test the room, and the easiest way to chat from a phone or a work laptop with the webcam taped over.

Adults only (18+). Chats may be moderated and reports are reviewed.

What text mode feels like

You pick your interest tags, press start, and get matched with one stranger at a time. Typing indicators show when the other person is mid-sentence, and you can move to the next match whenever a conversation stalls. There is no group chat, no feed to scroll, and no history to catch up on - just one conversation at a time.

  • One-to-one matching, so nobody is reading over the conversation
  • Typing indicator instead of a wall of silence
  • Skip keeps your tags and drops you into the next match
  • Switch to video mid-conversation if you both feel like it

Why text first works better

Typing buys you a beat to think. That is why text mode tends to produce better conversations for people who hate being put on the spot, and why it is the default choice for language learners and for anyone chatting in a second language.

It also removes the biggest source of friction in random video chat: the negotiation about whether cameras are on. In text mode there is nothing to negotiate.

Openers that do not fall flat

The tag you matched on is the best opener you have, because it is proof you both chose the same thing. After that, a question about the other person lands better than a statement about you.

  • Lead with the shared tag: "so what got you into this" beats "hi"
  • Ask something answerable in one line, then build on the answer
  • Say where you are joining from - time zone and city-level is plenty
  • Two flat one-word replies means skip; do not grind a dead conversation

Text chat etiquette

  • Do not open with a demand for age, name, photo, or social handles
  • Keep it civil: slurs, harassment, and sexual messages to strangers end the account
  • Do not paste links in the first message - that is a scam signature
  • Give a goodbye before you skip if the conversation has been going a while

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a camera for text chat?+

No. Text mode never asks for camera or microphone permission, and it works in any modern browser on desktop or mobile.

Are text conversations saved?+

No. Messages live in the room for the length of the match and are not stored on the server or shown to anyone else.

Can I switch between text and video?+

Yes. The mode switch sits in the room, and both modes share the same matching pool and interest tags.

Is text chat good for language practice?+

It is one of the most popular uses. Set your interest tags to the language you are learning and ask your match to correct you as you go.
